6/22 HHE Principal Update

Dear Hollywood Hill families,

It is an exciting and strange time to be in education. Not only are we in the middle of a world-wide pandemic that is challenging everything we know about school and how to be together in the world, but we are also faced with an opportunity to face head on the injustices of race in the world. I am comforted by the activism that I see in the world around me; it shows me that the students that we are raising together will and can change the world. We owe it to them to do our best to set them up to be successful in this new world. It is with that in mind that I am making a change for the coming year.

I am sad but excited to announce that I will be leaving Hollywood Hill and taking an assistant principal job at Frank Love Elementary. While there is no good time to make a transition, in concert with Dr. Reid and Mr. Tolley, I have decided that now is as good a time as any. Moving to Frank Love provides me with an opportunity to go to a building that has a special place in my heart from the days when I supported the district rollout of full day Kindergarten. I’m excited to join a leadership team at Frank Love that has been focused on the work of identifying implicit bias and looking at ways to ensure inequities are not perpetuated. When I entered the field of education 15 years ago, it was to this specific work that I had dedicated my efforts. At Frank Love, I will also continue to work on my personal leadership skills; moving to the assistant principal role allows me the space to do that work as well. It is through the brave personal development work that I believe we will all succeed in making education in Northshore more equitable and just.

We face ambiguous days ahead as COVID plays out and we determine how best to come back together in the fall. You will be in good hands. Hollywood Hill’s new leader will work with you and the amazing staff to plan and carry out a new vision for learning.

There are so many wonderful opportunities to being a part of the welcoming Hollywood Hill community. I am assured that your new leader, the students in the new highly capable  classes and new Sensory special education services will quickly become valued and proud Hollywood Hill Stars. With many new faces, there will remain a proud tradition and solid foundation to build upon.

Thank you for the time that you shared your children with me. I have been honored to be your principal and a mom alongside you.

All the best,

Denise Waters
